Wet Concrete+Flip Flops=

A few weeks ago I had a little accident. Carl, Brady and I were driven home from a friends house late (at like 11:30) one rainy night. I had Brady bundled in my arms since we had put him to bed at our friends. As I was walking into the garage I noticed a bug or something on the ground. I turned my body to look at it and possibly squash it. But, uh-oh, my foot slipped. I tried catching my balanced with the other foot, but that slipped too. Down we went, right inbetween our two parked cars. SMACK!!! Hello Concrete! Brady is wailing! Carl rushed over to us, stricken with fear of what just happened. My elbow and knee hurt, but so what. I'm more concerned about Brady. Did he hit his head?? I didn't hit mine, I don't think. There's no blood from him, no bumps. He just seems to be startled. Whew!! Our friend gets out of his car to see if we're okay. Carl points out a large purple bump on my elbow. They both comment that it's pretty gross. I'm feeling a little light headed so I take a seat on the ground. I reassure them I didn't hit my head and that I'm okay, I just needed to sit for a minute. We tell our friend we're okay and that he can go home.
Carl is carrying Brady now, my elbow hurts pretty bad. As I'm walking through the kitchen I think "Well, I won't be reading my book tonight....I'm really sleepy." I had just made it to the carpeted living room when I go down. I remember going down, though it's hazy, I didn't just fall over. The next thing I know Carl is yelling my name, Brady is crying again, and I'm signing milk (opening and closing my hand) with my good arm. Oh, that was strange. I tell Carl to put Brady in his bed and I'll just stay put til he gets back.
Upon his return, Carl assists me up and to the bedroom. I inform him of my need to use the toilet. We decide we'll just go to bed and have my elbow check in the morning at the Urgent Care. Carl stays by my side the whole time. He help me not to have to move my elbow. Just about finished, I think "I'm not going to bother washing my face tonight...." Again, Carl is yelling my name and I'm signing milk, all slumped like on the toilet. That wouldn't have been the first time I've fallen off the potty....
Carl tells me I went all unfocused and my body tensed up and just slumped down. He's the only reason I wasn't lying on the cold tile. We get me up and to the bed. Carl doesn't like my recent activities and has decided we're going to the hospital. After trying to get ahold of the friends we were with (they live just down the street) with no success, we decide we should probably take Brady with us anyway just incase. Poor kid had probably just gotten back to a good comefy sleeping position.
That was a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG night in the E.R. Everything was all fun and games until they decided I got to wear a C-Brace (a neck brace for people who may have ceasures) and to set up an IV. Now I was miserable. Not to mention Brady's adrenaline had worn off and he was tired and fussy. It was hard for him to lay down with me cuz he kept trying to get up and I couldn't hold him down due to my new incapacitations plus a bum elbow. The doctor checked him out and said he looked fine. We concurred. He could go home. I, however, was still getting tests done. The x-rays looked fine, nothing broken or fractured. They did a CAT scan. There were no cats in my head.
We contacted the LaVetters and got Brady over there at about 5 a.m. Things aren't very quick in the ER. Brady did manage to get some sleep until the baby in the next room started crying. I also got some sleep while Brady slept and while Carl took him to the LaVetters. About half an hour after he left, the nurse came in and told me I could go. Well, I couldn't REALLY go because 1)I had no car, 2)I couldn't drive until I got an EEG, and 3) I was DEAD tired! I waited a little while longer for Carl. I'm sure they were jut a tap, tap, tapping their feet to get me out of that room.
We went to bed when we got home, which was about 6ish. We slept until 9:30ish. Carl went to get Brady, who woke up at the LaVetters at 6. We spent most of the day sleeping, all three of us. Carl let me sleep more while he watched Brady. He's so good to me. We went to the nieces Ballet performance that night. I wouldn't miss that.
Carl stayed home Monday in the event that I could get into the doctors for the EEG. No luck, but it did help to have him home. Upon seeing the doctor (on Tuesday) he said I seem to be okay since I didn't have anymore issues after the bathroom one. He said what most likely happened was that my blood vessels in my neck expanded from all the adrenaline from not only falling, but falling with a child in arms, and caused the blood to drain from my head/brain. He called it syncope. I could drive and didn't need an EEG.
My elbow took a few weeks to heal up. It still is very sore on the little round ball part that is at the end. I'm pretty sure it took most of our weight.
Now that you have (possibly) read my fun little story, here are the pictures of my elbow a week later. Oh, what fun it is to fall on a rainy, stormy night! (think jingle bells)

Wow! I sure am glad the outcome wasn't worse. And I'm sure it was such a relief that Brady wasn't hurt at all.

Now see here young lady!!!
1. You did NOT accurately recount your story when you dropped Brady off while you went to the Ballet. "I fell and hit my elbow..." why I oughtta...
2. Next time you have to go to the ER in the middle of the night I expect you to drop Brady off FIRST. No little chicken should be put through that (nor a spouse have to worry about more than one family member at a time). Besides, one middle of the night drop off would finally make us even on the babysitting scales.
So, next time you knock yourself out... well I just hope your learned your lesson.
