Yes, he DOES do his own stunts.

Cold tile + diapered baby = ???

It's beginning to look a little like Christmas

There is white stuff on the ground!! It's not snow, but it will do. We had a lot of sleet come down yesterday. It is all frozen now. I thought, "Oh, I'll shovel the driveway so it's safe to walk on." Quickly did I learn that that stuff don't shovel up.

We accumulated 1 1/2 inches of "ice sheet" on the driveway. You could skate on that thing! The leaves on my plants have a nice ice glaze that I hope they survive.

While I was out side, I realized that I LOVE the cold. I love the dry chill that hits your nose and cheeks while the rest of you is bundled up all nice and cozy. I would much rather be in a snow storm than a heat spell.

I was watching Jon and Kate Plus 8 last night. They were skiing in Park City. Oh, it made me want to get out in the cold white stuff and frolick. So, Let it Snow!

Brady's words

Melanie was the closest guess with "football." Congratulations, you win......umm, not $50....

Brady is signing more words every few days. I think he signed "cat" today, and he's been doing "dog" for a week or so. He has also picked up on "sleep." He tries to sign "book" but it looks like just clapping or "more." He does say "buuh, buuh" and furiously sign "more" each time a story ends.

In addition to signing and baby english, he chatters on and on about who knows what. He loves to make a surprised "Ooh" face. Sometimes he breathes in and out and it makes a whistle sound.

Carl hopes to have him saying "Bronco Mendenhall" by the end of the year. I'm just shooting for "ho ho ho."

Tooth Update

I was finally able to get and post a pic of Brady's tooth. We've got another one on the way. Soon there will be two of them!

Thanksgiving, anyone?

This years Thanksgiving memories will have to rely on brain power. As Uncle Dave was carving up our yummy turkey I went to get the camera. AH!! It was not in ze bag! It was home. Oh sad! Even though we live 5 minutes away, we didn't get it. So, no pictures of that lovley day. Just memories. (isn't that what people did BEFORE cameras??)

This years Thanksgiving started off with a good ol' Turkey Bowl at ASU for the men-folk. A bunch of guys (missionaries and church members) got together and tossed around the pigskin. Carl says it was worth it, even with all the sore and spasming muscles that followed. When they got home we finished preparing our contributions to the dinner. The best part was waiting for the pie to bake. We busted out a most beloved board game and had a blast! We went to Uncle Dave's house this year. Brady missed most of dinner due to his need to take a 4 o'clock nap. Dinner was wonderful with lots of good sides. I did miss Grandma B's turkey and pilgrim salt and pepper shakers. We have lots of left over food. It was wonderful to be with people you love.

First Words

Brady is pretty close to saying his first word. What were your children's first words and when did they say them? I'll give $50 to the person who guesses what Brady's first word is. okay not really, but you can guess anyway.....

This just in...

It's been coming for a few days....the wakeful nights, the on-going crankiness, the excessive amounts of drool. It has finally broken through.....

Brady's 1st Tooth!!!!

It seems to have granted him some relief having it finally emerge. Which is giving us relief from the unusual crankiness he has been exhibiting. Now back to your local programming....

Privacy Please!

So after recieving a comment from a random person, I'm seriously thinking about going private. It wasn't rude or anything, it just freaked me out that a 50 year old man is looking at pictures of my baby. So, if I you'd like to continue to view our blog, please let me know. So please send me an e-mail or leave a comment or mail me a letter or gimme a call, whatever you'd like to do. I don't want to exclude anyone that wants to keep up on our adventures out here. Thanks for watching, and I promise, this is the last post de jour.

Halloween 2008

We had a lot of fun this Halloween! We went to our Branch Party for some good chili and hotdogs. Everyone was dressed up quite nicely. Brady and Carl won awards for the cutest costume and scariest costume, respectively. Then we went trick-or-treating with our nieces (and their parents). Carl was so cute as he proudly held up his little froggy to the people at the doors (or sitting in lawn chairs on the driveway.) I love them both very very much, even when they are green.

Brady didn't think much of the pumpkin guts.
Carl is the Hulk (TV Version), Brady a Frog and I am a Couger Fan. (I was going to be a princess to kiss the frog, but none of my "princess" dresses fit)

The pumpkins we carved. So pretty!!
*I am really getting my blog on today!! don't worry, the baby is sleeping and the laundry is going.*

On the verge

I feel like I'm on the verge of failing in the area of discipline with Brady. Okay, so it's really only the start of the many years of discipline, but I think I'm not doing such a good job already. He has this natural curiosity for blinking lights and pushing buttons. Can you tell me, what has blinking lights and buttons to push? Okay, I'll tell you. The computer and its accompanying power strip.

It never fails. He sees the flashing light on the CPU and drags himself over to it. He has discovered the flaps (ours has flaps) for the CD-Rom drives and the buttons that go with it. He's been playing with the flap that covers the USB ports for a while now. I let him do it. What harm can he do? He's got it into his head that this is an okay place to play. I don't want him breaking the CD-Rom drives, or turning the computer off so I tell him "no" or "stop" (and sign) and move him. He looks up at me and grins. After moving him away from the tempting toy, he quickly scoots back to resume play. I say "Brady..." in my most stern and mothering voice. What does the little bumpkin do?? Looks up at me and smiles, acts like he's getting away from it only to resume play with even more vigor.

Today he spotted the powerstrip. Before I could realize what he was doing *Blink* off goes the computer. DAH!!!! Good thing I wasn't in the middle of something important. So what option do I have? I tell him "no, that was not a good thing to do" and remove him from the area. Again, play resumes.

Carl said he's put together that when he plays with the CPU, he gets attention from me. That is not what I wanted for my children!! I feel I spend LOTS of time with him! Heaven forbid I leave him to play while I clean, cook or check e-mail!

So, my son has figured out how to get attention from me. It's negative attention though. I didn't want him to do that. Now I don't know what to do. Do I let him play with the forbidden after telling him "no"? Do I put him in time out (which I don't think you can do that at 8 months)? Or do I just keep pulling him away and giving him the attention (all be it, negative) he's looking for? I really don't want to mess up my kids. I'm all for doing the hard stuff now so that down the road things will be easier. You know, it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks. Please, fill me up with your all-so-experienced parenting advise....please?

Let the poor get poorer...

Ah, the Arkansasn Lottery. 'Twas not in existance until voters made their voices heard yesterday. They voted for Proposed Constitutional Amendment No. 3 to allow AR to have lotteries to fund scholarships and grants for college.

Let me start of by admitting that I have not fully read the arguments on the subject. I am just speaking on my own uneducated opinion. Please feel free to enlighten me with any other viewpoints. I'm just too lazy (I've got better things to do) to search and read everything there is about it. So there, disclaimer finsihed.

I don't agree with it lottery. Why? Well, from my point of view, it will be those that can't really afford a lottery ticket that will be purchasing them. Those that dream of having a big bag o' cash pluncked in to their hands to make their life better are those who are struggling to make ends meet. What motivation do the "well-off" people have to buy lottery tickets? If I were "doing just fine" I wouldn't give it a thought. The rich may fund a part of it out of entertainment, sure. I feel that the majority of the funds will be coming from lower-middle class individuals, hoping for their big break. I have an idea, why don't we NOT use our money (hard-earned or government provided) on a game of chance that sports the face of helping our community and just give directly to the source? Cut out the middle-man and all the hubbub. If 10,000 people spend $1 on a ticket each week, or month or however it works, that's $10,000 that could go STRAIGHT to the school. Let the lower-middle class use their money for something that has greater odds of helping them out, like healthcare, nutritious food for their families, or education materials to enhance the opportunity for your own (or your children's) government or private party-funded scholarship.

This is from http://arkansasmatters.com:

Proposed Constitutional Amendment No. 3
Creating State Lotteries to Support Higher Education Scholarships and Grants Proposed Constitutional Amendment No. 3: A constitutional amendment authorizing the General Assembly to establish, operate, and regulate state lotteries to fund scholarships and grants for Arkansas citizens enrolled in certified two-year and four-year colleges and universities in Arkansas.
Support: HOPE for Arkansas, Arkansas AFL-CIO
Oppose: Family Council Action Committee, Arkansas Faith and Ethics Council, Arkansas Farm Bureau Federation, United Methodists Against Gambling

What does this amendment do? The proposal would amend the Constitution of the State of Arkansas to establish state lotteries to fund scholarships and grants for Arkansas citizens enrolled in two-year and four-year colleges and universities located in the state. The initiative specifically prohibits lotteries and the sale of lottery tickets except as provided in the proposed amendment, meaning no other entity other than the State of Arkansas would have authority to run a lottery operation. If passed by voters in November, the Arkansas General Assembly would be responsible for developing a framework of state laws to establish, operate and regulate state lotteries.

Put your finger tips together....

For more, more, more.

It finally clicked!! While on vacation (I know it's been a while since I've been home. Getting back into the swing of things takes a bit o' time) he started signing "more." It was a miraculous moment for me. I had been so close to just giving up the whole signing thing until he was 12 months old and could physically catch on, and I would see results sooner. Then "TA-DAAAAAAAAAAAAA" the angels sang, light filled the room, and all was well in Zion. I was so estatic! Now he is signing "more" and "eat." I think he was doing "ball" today, but it looked like "more", so I'm not sure. It sure is great to know that your creatin understands you and wants to communicate with you.

Back Home on the Range

Ah, rural Arkansas. We made it home alright. Brady was great, as usual, on the airplane. Mommy was definately more excited to be home than Brady was. I had to promise myself not to cry as I said goodbye to the family so that my mascara would stay in place and I'd look hot (as hot as I could look) for Carl. I didn't cry but I did end up getting bananas and spit up on my shirt. I was going for the "Mommy in action" look. Life here is getting back to normal. The grocery shopping resumed on Monday, the finances updated and laundry is on deck for tomorrow. Yup, life is good. Although I hear we missed a pretty killer halloween party.

I do want to apologize to those that I didn't get to see while out in Utah. I felt like a chicken with its head cut off. I needed another week to actually have some relaxing vacation. I loved my time out there, don't get me wrong. So, throw eggs at me, curse me or shake your fist at me. Just forgive me after you do such. Thanks.
This is Brady seeing daddy for the first time. It took a few times of being playfully, but gently, raised into the air for the cobwebs to be shaken. Now they are good buds again.

How time flies...

I can't believe it's almost over!! Pretty soon Brady and I will be in humid Arkansas. We are both very excited to see the Daddy-Man! I picture a sweet reunion of slow-motion running, arms held our for each other, our hair flowing behind us, one of us tripping and smacking our faces on the ground....Is it it romantic??? I think so.

We went to a Chinese Restaurant (family tradition.) It was pretty good in my books. We had lots of fun visiting different people. Today we went to old workplaces and showed Mr. Brady off. We have done LOTS of driving around. I feel like I should put Brady into another carseat for weeks after we get back. I got to do some scrapbooking yesterday. I'm not real big into it, but it was fun. If it didn't take this and that, and some of these and some of those that end up costing you a bunch, I'd do it everyday. I think I am going to start out small and get a few supplies when I get back home.

We also went downtown to the Family History Library. It is amazing!!! I could do that for hours on end. Although, I found out my father-in-law passed away in 1965....which kinda freaks me out cuz he seems to be alive and kickin' to me. Any ideas on how that happened???

Brady has been quite the ladies man out here. He has met at least 3 other little girls. He gets very excited over each of them. Already our little heartbreaker. You mommas and pappas better watch out for your girls. There is one good looking boy comming their way. And he knows how to flirt.

To those in AR, we'll see you soon.

To those in UT, it's been a blast and we hope to see you again soon.

Airplane!!

We made it to Utah all safe and sound. I think Brady had a good time on the plane.
There was this great old man behind us on our last leg of the trip who played with him. It was nice for mom to get a little break and browse through the Sky Mall magazine at all the unitaskers and must-haves for any rational human begin. (note the sarcasim)

So far we have visited Grandpa Johns workplace, went to the D.I., Macey's, and Suhmifs (as I said when I was a wee one), we have visited friends and played with these awesome foam blocks from Hobby Lobby. We have many more fun-filled days ahead of us and can't wait to see more family. The time is passing all too quickly for us, but not fast enough for Carl. We miss you daddy!

Conference

One of the perks of having a nursing wife is the mothers room. Since Conference isn't broadcast on public TV out here, some of the members go to the church house to view it. A handfull go on Sunday to watch the morning session then have lunch. Carl took the opportunity to take advantage of afore mentioned room. He and Brady had a good time.

Are you feeling tired, worn down, underappriciated??

I heard this talk from President Dieter F. Uchtdorf at the General Relief Society Confrence. It was an answer to my prayers. This is just a little blurb from the talk, a teaser I guess. The things he spoke of had me going "Yes, yes I feel that! I'm not alone! Even a Man understands what I'm feeling! If he is speaking about it, there MUST be others who feel how I do. I am not alone. Not only are there other women going through most of these same struggles, but God is also here to help lift me up."

To All Who Are Weary
Today I would like to speak to those who have ever felt inadequate, discouraged, or weary—in short, I would like to speak to all of us.
I also pray that the Holy Ghost will amplify my words and bestow upon them additional meaning, insight, and inspiration.
We know that sometimes it can be difficult to keep our heads above water. In fact, in our world of change, challenges, and checklists, sometimes it can seem nearly impossible to avoid feeling overwhelmed by emotions of suffering and sorrow.
I am not suggesting that we can simply flip a switch and stop the negative feelings that distress us. This isn’t a pep talk or an attempt to encourage those sinking in quicksand to imagine instead they are relaxing on a beach. I recognize that in all of our lives there are real concerns. I know there are hearts here today that harbor deep sorrows. Others wrestle with fears that trouble the soul. For some, loneliness is their secret trial.
These things are not insignificant.
However, I would like to speak about two principles that may help you find a path to peace, hope, and joy—even during times of trial and distress. I want to speak about God’s happiness and how each one of us can taste of it in spite of the burdens that beset us.

To read the rest of this wonderful talk click here. Now as I set the dinner table, I try my hardest not to apologize for my percieved inadequate cuisine. Thanks, President Uchtdorf!

Less than 24 hours...

OH THE ANGST!!!!!

I am torn! Torn, I tell you! I am soooo excited to be out there with family and friends, yet, I am painfully aware that Carl is not going to be with me for the trip. I guess I really do love him.

I've spent the last few days cleaning the house. I don't want anything to be dirty or left undone for Carl. I want him to be able to relax as much as possible. I feel like I'm leaving a child. I went grocery shopping yesterday and got all sorts of food for him. I'm sure he's fully capable of feeding him self enough to sustain his life for 17 days. I probably could have not gone shopping and let him do that this weekend (there really wasn't any food to eat for myself, so a trip we made.)

In my head are the many things I think about and do everyday. Just buzzing around in there. They never come out though, because when they want to it is always a very inopportune moment. Like when it is midnight and hubby is lightly snoozing on his way to dream land. What kind of loving wife would wake him up to tell him "please clean out the litter tray thing that the cats walk on as they get out of the potty." It wouldn't do me any good because he wouldn't remember anything I said the next day. Breath. The house will not fall apart while you are gone. Right???

Are you dead, mon?

No, we're not dead. I'm just BUSY BUSY BUSY!!! This week has seemed SO long. What have we been up to lately? Well...

  • Lots of MOMS Club activities. We went to the park again on Tuesday. Brady loves to swing. He had lots of fun with his (I think) 6-weeks-to-the-elder friend Kason. I'm glad he has someone to watch and learn new feats from. MOMS Club has helped save my sanity. It has provided a variety of women to connect with. If you're feeling alone and you find you're needing a reason to get out of the house a couple of times a week, I highly recommend checking out your local chapter.
  • Going, then not going, then going, and then not going again to Baton Rouge, LA to help with the hurricane relief. Carl was schedualed twice to go, but alas the trips have been cancelled. Do we still get the blessings? (please say yes!)
  • Packing for the BIG TRIP. Imagine me standing there wide eyed, perplexed about what in the world amd I supposed to take with me on this trip?? I've packed myself for long trips before. But what in the world do I and don't I need for Brady? I've seen lists that give general examples, but what about his books for nap time? What about his light-flashing, sound-making toys? Ahh, my brain is spinning.....Will one of you pack for me? Please?? Pretty please????
  • Reviewing where our hard-earned money has gone, and where it needs to go to. Darn Budgeting.....
  • Enjoying the new things Brady is doing. From practicing his high voice, to doing downward facing dog, and taking the long way around the couch it has been a blast.

So, we've been busy. We are happy here in little ole Arkansas learning and growing and experiencing a brand new way of life!

So two weeks ago Carl won the Gridpicks from our local newspaper. Now look!!

Jonesboro resident wins Grid PicksGretchen LaVetter of Jonesboro won last weekend’s Grid Picks contest on a tiebreaker.LaVetter missed four games and came within two points on her tiebreaker, LSU’s 26-21 victory over Auburn. LaVetter can collect the $50 prize at The Sun, 518 Carson in Jonesboro, after 3 p.m. on Friday.

Ooh a Park!

After walking around the lake, Brady got to play on the playground. He liked the slide. He really liked the swing.

Talking

Brady has so much to say these days. It comes out in "La la la," "dadada," high pitched squeals and grunty-growls. He's working on "bababa" and I'm trying to get "mamama" out of him. He has figured out that he can move his tongue and make lots of different sounds, like clicking and, of course, raspberry blowing. Please enjoy this "coversation" about our upcoming trip.

This is what happened after the pants came out of the basket. I don't know how they got there.

How Time Flies When You're Having Fun

Five years!!

It's been great, Love. Thank you for the laughter, the growing, the support and the baby. Let's see where the next five years will take us.

This season on Survivor...

I got this in an e-mail and found it hilarious enough to post.

THE NEXT SURVIVOR SERIES

Six married men will be dropped on an island with one car and 3 kids each for six weeks.

Each kid will play two sports and either take music or dance classes.

There is no fast food.

Each man must take care of his 3 kids; keep his assigned house clean, correct all homework, and complete science projects, cook, do laundry, and pay a list of 'pretend' bills with not enough money.

In addition, each man will have to budget in money for groceries each week.

Each man must remember the birthdays of all their friends and relatives, and send cards out on time--no emailing.

Each man must also take each child to a doctor's appointment, a dentist appointment and a haircut appointment.

He must make one unscheduled and inconvenient visit per child to the Urgent Care.

He must also make cookies or cupcakes for a social function.

Each man will be responsible for decorating his own assigned house, planting flowers outside and keeping it presentable at all times.

The men will only have access to television when the kids are asleep and all chores are done.

The men must shave their legs, wear makeup daily, adorn himself with jewelry, wear uncomfortable yet stylish shoes, keep fingernails polished and eyebrows groomed.

During one of the six weeks, the men will have to endure severe abdominal cramps, back aches, and have extreme, unexplained mood swings but never once complain or slow down from other duties.

They must attend weekly school meetings, church, and find time at least once to spend the afternoon at the park or a similar setting.

They will need to read a book to the kids each night and in the morning, feed them, dress them, brush their teeth and comb their hair by 7:00 am.

A test will be given at the end of the six weeks, and each father will be required to know all of the following information: each child's birthday, height, weight, shoe size, clothes size and doctor's name. Also the child's weight at birth, length, time of birth, and length of labor, each child's favorite color, middle name, favorite snack, favorite song, favorite drink, favorite toy, biggest fear and what they want to be when they grow up.

The kids vote them off the island based on performance.

The last man wins only if...he still has enough energy to be intimate with his spouse at a moment's notice.

If the last man does win, he can play the game over and over and over again for the next 18-25 years eventually earning the right To be called

Mother!

After you get done laughing, send this to as many females as you think will get a kick out of it and as many men as you think can handle it. Just don't send it back to me.... I'm going to bed.

Friday, September 19, 2008

Why oh why does my child refuse to take long naps??? I never know when he is going to sleep for 40 minutes, or 2.5 hours. Now is one of those times I'd really like him to have slept for at least an hour. Well, fuddle. Here I go to rescue the little roaring loin from his cage....

Brady's Food Diaries

For those of you who are interested (mostly my mom) I've uploaded all the footage of Brady and his new adventures with "solid" foods. Yes, I admit, we are camera happy. We are going to have hours and hours of footage of our children doing the most simple, everyday things. That's okay by me because they are only little for a short while. So, enjoy Brady in all his messiness!!

NASTY MA-JASTY!!

While Carl was weed-whacking this spider jumped up onto the fence. Holy Cow is it gross looking!! I've opted not to post the pictures here because, quite frankly, it's yucky. If you would like to view them, click here. The fence posts are 5 1/2 inches wide, which will tell you how HUGE this thing is. I googled "black and yellow spider" and this what wikipedia had to say about it:

"In North America, Argiope aurantia is commonly known as the "black and yellow garden spider", or "writing spider," after the mistaken idea web stabilimenta were correspondence."

"Like almost all other spiders, Argiope are harmless to humans. Like most garden spiders they eat insects, and they are capable of consuming prey up to twice their size. A. savigny was even reported to occasionally feed on the small bat Rhynchonycteris naso[3]. They might bite if grabbed, but other than for defense they have no interest in biting humans. Their venom is not regarded as a serious medical problem for humans, although they often contain a library of polyamine toxins with potential as therapeutic medicinal agents.[4] Among these, the notable Argiotoxin ArgTX-636 (A. lobata)."

What does this mean to me? Well, I guess I could still send my boy out to play knowning that one of these might be lurking some where. That still doesn't lessen the feeling that they are gross. Bleh.

On a lighter note, last time Carl was yard-working he found this cute little guy:

This I can deal with. He was all sticky like. Boomer LOVED chasing him around the kitchen. Everytime she'd get close enough to smell him, he'd hop away. Aww, cute little froggy.

So many are excited about September 25, 2008. Me, I'm a little conflicted. Why?? Well because that's my anniversary!! What will I be doing that night?? Well, Carl is in school, so here are my options a) Sit at home and sulk, b) go to a mom's night out, c) hope that I'll be lucky enough to have a kind and generous person invite me into their home with a little baby to enjoy the twisted love triangle that is Dwight, Angela and Andy and to see my hot dream-boyfriend Jim. What will it be? d) Go to mom's night out and watch the episode online with Carl after he gets home from school??? Only time will tell.
